Complete Guide For GoPro HERO13 Best Underwater Video & Photo Settings
The GoPro HERO 13 Black is the best camera from GoPro to date and is our favorite action camera. The GoPro HERO13 has upgraded battery life for longer shoots, super smooth image stabilization, and a suite of accessories making it a great option to capture 4K Ultra High Definition video clips underwater. The small size and simplistic operation of the GoPro makes it perfect for beginners looking to capture video underwater for the first time, or any diver looking to easily pick up high-quality video clips. This guide is designed to set underwater GoPro users up for success by providing step-by-step instructions on how to equip, set up, and use the GoPro HERO13 for diving, freediving, and snorkeling. Be sure to download a copy of the Cheat Sheet PDF for a hard copy of the settings. We recommend laminating a copy and keeping it in your camera bag. Watch our GoPro HERO13 settings guide video for even more detail, advice, and pro tips. Download a copy of these settings to save and share. DOWNLOAD BEST SETTINGS GUIDEESSENTIAL UNDERWATER ACCESSORIESSet yourself up for success with the essential underwater accessories Here are the essential underwater accessories that we recommend for the GoPro HERO13 as well as how to use them. GoPro HERO13 Black Our favorite action camera for underwater shooting, and one of the best on the market. Perfect for capturing 4K 60p video and beyond. GoPro Protective Dive Housing Depth rated to 196ft/60m, the GoPro HERO9 Protective allows for extra protection and is required to mount the FLIP Filter System and Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro. FLIP12 Filters & +15 MACROMATE MINI Lens Interchangeable and modular filter and lens systems that solve the two biggest issues GoPros face when shooting underwater: color correction and close macro focus. Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro Significantly upgrade image quality, with the Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro. This lens expands the field of view to 140 degrees, increases the sharpness corner to corner, and can be used with color correction filters. Wide Angle Requires a Filter GoPros are not able to set a manual white balance to restore red, orange, and yellow tones that are lost when shooting at depth. In order to restore these warmer colors at depth, color correction filters are required. Without filters, the resulting footage will appear cyan and washed out, lacking vibrancy and contrast. The GoPro HERO13 can also combine filters with video lights for punchier, more saturated-looking colors than just the filters or lights alone. GoPro Cameras need a filter to restore warm color tones at depth. Macro Requires a Lens The GoPro HERO13 has a fixed focus lens, anything closer than about 12” will result in soft, out of focus images making the camera on its own unusable for macro shooting. The +10 Close Up Lens and +15 MacroMate solve this problem by moving the focus point significantly closer, allowing the camera to fill the frame with smaller subjects while maintaining sharp focus. By adding accessory lenses the focus range of the camera can be moved closer, allowing for sharp shots of smaller macro subjects. Enhance Wide Angle Footage with the Sharp Wide Lens Pro The Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro increases corner sharpness while expanding the field of view to 140 degrees for wider, more epic footage. The Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro also allows you to focus closer, to better fill the frame with your subjects. The Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro can also be used with color correction filters for perfect in-camera color. The Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro dramatically increases the field of view, while increasing sharpness and decreasing the focus distance.Backscatter Double Handle Tray and Arch Stability is key to good video footage, and a tray with dual handles is more stable than a single handle or selfie stick. The Backscatter Double Handle and Tray offers added stability along with points of attachment for accessories. The Wide Double Handle and Tray can accommodate control arm mounts, lanyards, tripods, and the additional arch. The arch provides an additional carry handle, and additional mounts for other accessories, including lens holders. Control Arms: Ball or Flex Control arms come in two styles, Ball and Flex. Flex Arms are less expensive and simple to maneuver into place, but they cannot use floats and aren't as stable or precise to aim as Ball arms. Ball arms are a bigger initial investment, but offer the ability to add buoyancy compensation and offer precise and stable control for lighting placement. Ball arms are what we recommend most. Backscatter Macro Wide 4300 Video Light GoPro cameras require a lot of light for the highest quality footage and adding video lights is the best way to brighten the scene. The Backscatter Macro Wide 4300 is more than bright enough to allow the GoPro to produce great-looking results even when shooting deep or dark. The Backscatter Macro Wide 4300 is highly versatile, with built-in wide, spot, and red modes. We recommend using two lights when shooting wide angle to completely and evenly fill the scene. A single light is required for macro, with the option of adding on the Optical Snoot OS-1 to highlight a camouflaged subject and darken the background. Learn more about the Backscatter Macro Wide 4300 Video Light with our review here.Tripod Nobody likes watching shaky footage. A flexible tripod is required for solid, professional looking macro video. Since macro work distances are super close, even the smallest shake can ruin the shot. GETTING STARTEDPower On & Setup Before powering on your GoPro for the first time you will need to download the GoPro Quik App on your smartphone. This is required to activate the camera and to download the latest firmware. PRO TIP: Downloading the Quik app and activating the GoPro requires a good internet connection, so make sure to take care of this step before you leave on a trip where access to the internet can be unreliable. You will then be prompted to select a language, agree to terms and conditions, and set GPS. We always set GPS to off since it doesn't work underwater. Next, the GoPro HERO13 will prompt you on voice commands, set this to off, since you will not be able to issue voice commands underwater. The GoPro will then provide you with QR code to complete activating the camera and to download updated firmware. Just scan the code with your camera’s phone, and the app will proceed to this stage. You can also add the GoPro manually by using the app. Once the GoPro has completed setup through the app, you can provide it with a custom name, or keep the assigned one. Power on and SetupDownload the Quick app and use it to activate your GoProSelect LanguageAgree to Terms and ConditionsSet GPS to OffSet Voice Commands to Off Dashboard Settings From the main shooting screen, swipe down to access the Dashboard. The Dashboard is populated by eight icons along with the time and other info at the top of the screen. Each of these icons can either be toggled on (blue) off (gray) or pressed for more options. The Dashboard Voice Control: OffCamera Volume: Off Screen Saver: Off Screen Lock: Off Front Display: Off Orientation: LockedLEDs: All On Lens Attachment: Standard or Auto Detect The Dashboard settings are set-and-forget and remain unchanged regardless of shooting mode. We will not need to make any further changes to the Dashboard. Your Dashboard icons should look exactly like this when set correctly.Controls and Preferences Swipe right from the Dashboard to bring up Pair Device, Controls, and Preferences. Now tap the controls box, then swipe up from Easy to Pro. Easy provides a simplified interface that will not let us access all the settings we need to get the most out of our GoPro HERO13 for underwater shooting. Controls: ProSet the Controls to Pro in order to use the best settings for underwater shooting. Preferences Next, select Preferences, then General. The General Settings are as follows: General Settings:Quik Capture: OnDefault Preset: Last Used VideoAuto Power Off: Never/15 MinutesLEDS: All On Now tap the back indicator on the top left of the screen and scroll down to Displays. Set the Displays setting as follows: Displays Settings:Screen Saver: 5 Minutes (we disabled Screen using the Dashboard, regardless of the setting here) Brightness: 100%Grid: Off Regional Tap the back indicator again, and scroll down to Regional, then check out Regional Format. This should be set to 60hz which is the North American Standard for NTSC. If you are in a country that uses the PAL standard switch it to 50hz. These settings will cause the frame rate settings to change slightly. Reset Now Head back to Preferences, then to Reset. This gives you the option to Format SD Card, which we want to do in order to empty the card and format it for the camera. Make sure to back up the memory card first as formatting it will completely erase any media stored on the card. PRO TIP: Always format the card through the Reset menu rather than deleting media from the card. You can delete the media from Reset Menu or by swiping left to the media information menu. Deleting images and video can cause the card to corrupt overtime, so it is always better to format and to never delete. Battery Conservation Tips & Settings The GoPro HERO13 has greatly improved the battery life with the new Enduro batteries than previous GoPros, that being said, we are always looking to get the most battery life out of any camera. Set Auto Power Off to 'Never' if you are operating the camera through an entire dive or to “15 Min” if you are concerned about leaving the camera on for extended periods of time while it is not in use. Use QuikCapture with Default Preset set to 'Last Used'. If you've manually turned the camera off or it powered off automatically from Auto Power Off, QuikCapture allows you to instantly begin recording with just pressing the record button. Never use Screen Saver to conserve Power, and always set it to 'Never'. Screen saver will cause the screen to go black during recording, which will cause you to lose sight of your subject. Use Auto Power Off instead for automatic power management. The brightness of the screen will greatly affect the amount of battery life used by the GoPro. We recommend it to be set at 100% to make sure the screen is easily visible in bright, shallow conditions. If you are shooting in darker conditions or at night, reducing the screen brightness to 60-50% will prolong the runtime of the GoPro. CUSTOM PRESETSThe Secret Menu & Custom Presets When the camera is sealed in the Dive Housing the touch screen cannot be accessed. The user is effectively locked out of all settings choices other than choosing between video, photo, and time-lapse modes by using the Mode button. To overcome this, we need to use what we call the “Secret Menu”. The Secret Menu allows us to access Custom Presets without use of the touch screen. To activate the Secret Menu, first hold down the Mode button, and then the Record button. Do not press them simultaneously, make sure the Mode button is pressed first then (while holding the mode button) press the Record button after. Once you have accessed the Secret Menu you can now use the Mode button to cycle through your custom presets and your Record button to select one. Using the Secret Menu system we are no longer dependent on the touch screen for changing custom presets. The default presets are not suited well for shooting underwater, so you must create Custom Presets using our ideal settings to replace them. Once created you can select the Custom Presets by using the Secret Menu. With different Custom Presets, you can use the Secret Menu to easily change between wide angle, macro, slow-motion, and any other modes while the camera is sealed in the housing. By cycling through user-created Custom Presets, you can switch between shooting modes while the camera is in the housing without using the touch screen. Creating Custom Presets Creating new Custom Presets is very easy. At the main shooting screen, tap the settings box in the bottom middle of the screen. Next, scroll down to the bottom of the custom presets until you see + Create New Presets. This will take you to the New Preset page starting with Mode. Mode The first option presented is mode. The options displayed in Mode are dependent on what shooting mode the camera is in. If you are in Video Mode, only video mode options will be displayed, with Photo or Time Lapse having their own distinct options when in those modes. Select Video to access the next settings menu. Profile The first option in the custom settings menu is Profile which will determine the camera's picture profile. Select Standard to use the GoPro's native picture profile, which produces good color out of camera, without a ton of editing. The other options include HDR and Log. HDR can produce overly vivid colors that require an HDR monitor to view, while Log produces flat colors that require post production color grading. Framing Next up is Framing. This will determine how much of the sensor is being used to record your video. Each option has its place, but we will pick 16:9 for traditional video. 9:16 is good for vertical video if you are shooting for social media, while 8:7 uses the entire sensor, allowing you crop in post production editing for either a 16:9 traditional view or 9:16 vertical. Keep in mind if you choose 8:7, it will require some post-production know-how. PRO TIP: If you pick any other Framing type than 16:9, make sure to include it with your custom preset name so you don't get your settings mixed up. Resolution Resolution determines how many pixels, or how much detail, is recorded by the camera. You have multiple options for resolution, including 1080HD, 2.7K, 4K and 5.3K. Each option has its pros and cons and will depend largely on your goals and how powerful your computer is. The most popular options are 1080HD and 4K. 1080HD is best used for older computers that may have trouble working with larger 4K files. 4K has four times the resolution as 1080, allowing for greater detail. 5.3K has 91% more resolution than 4K, but will produce the largest files, while 2.7K is used more for high framerate, slow motion work. The best way to determine what option is best for you is to take some sample shots and test them using your computer. We'll pick 4K since that's our go-to, general use resolution. 4K has four times the resolution of 1080HD, but will require a more modern computer to edit. 5.3K even more so. Frame Rate After Resolution is Frame Rate. Frame Rate is how many frames per second are recorded in your video. Frame Rate is associated with the resolution selected, with higher resolutions offering fewer frames per second than lower-resolution options. The faster the frame rate, the more you can slow down your footage, with the fastest options being used for super-slow motion. We'll select 60 frames per second for general-purpose shooting. 60fps is our favorite option since it can be slowed down by 50% in post-production for slower-looking footage. PRO TIP: Using 30fps instead of 60fps is a good choice when shooting in a lowlight environment. By switching to 30fps the camera is going to default to a slower shutter speed, allowing the scene to be brighter if your footage appears too dark or grainy. Keep in mind that when shooting at a lower frame rate, you won't have those extra frames to slow down your footage while editing. Digital Lens The Digital Lens setting determines the field of view of the GoPro. For wide angle shooting, select W for wide, which is the widest field of view without greatly distorting the image. Super View (SV) or Hyper View (HV) are not great options since they highly distort the image, making it look unnatural. If you want a wider field of view than just the GoPro's standard lens, use the Backscatter Sharp Wide Lens Pro to increase the field of view to 140 degrees. For macro shooting, select L for Linear, as we want the tightest field of view possible. In addition to using linear, you will want to zoom the lens to 1.4X in order to fill the frame with your subject and avoid vignetting and reflections. The Zoom option is available in the Capture settings when you scroll down. HyperSmooth HyperSmooth is GoPRo's digital image stabilization. We recommend setting this to 'On' as the stabilization is extremely effective and will provide you with much smoother footage than with it turned off. HyperSmooth will crop the field of view of the camera, but the benefits provided by the stability are well worth it. ProTune Scroll down to access the ProTune settings. These are the advanced exposure, image quality, and sound settings. The ProTune settings will need to be assigned to each of our Custom Presets, but are basically the same for all settings. Set Protunes as follows where applicable. For more information, see the Custom Preset section for each setting below or watch the video above for a more detailed explanation. Bit Depth: 10 BitBit Rate: High Shutter: AutoEV Comp: -0.5White Balance: AutoISO Min: AutoISO Max: AutoSharpness: LowDenoise: MediumColor: NaturalPRO TIP: ISO is the camera's sensitivity to light. The lower the ISO, the better the image quality will be. GoPro cameras need A LOT of light for the best image quality possible. To get the most out of the GoPro when diving in deeper or darker conditions, it is best to use lights to brighten the scene. When it comes to ISO settings, you will find many GoPro settings guides suggesting a fixed upper limit rather than Auto ISO, however, our testing revealed that Auto ISO produced cleaner results when compared to setting an upper ISO limit. Auto ISO is the best choice for shooting underwater, as conditions easily shift with depth, weather, and visibility. The ProTune settings are almost the same for each Custom Preset but will have to be assigned individually for each as part of the creation process.Shortcuts Scroll down from ProTune to access the Shortcuts. Shortcuts are the icons that appear on the main screen that allow you to access your favorite features, but require use of the touch screen. Since the touch screen is not accessible when in the housing, turn set all Shortcuts to 'Off' for a less cluttered shooting screen. With the Shortcuts removed, tap the check mark at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Shortcuts cannot be accessed while in the housing, and removing them from the shooting screen provides a clearer view of your subject.Name & Save the Preset The final step of creating your custom preset will be naming it. The GoPro HERO13 allows you to enter a custom name of your preset, allowing you to have clear descriptions, so you never accidentally choose the wrong setting. To do this, select Create Custom Name, then tap the checkmark in the top right-hand corner. From here, you can name your setting to best describe what it is and what it is for. Our naming conventions are typically what the setting is used for (wide or macro), then the resolution and frame rate (4K 60, 5.3K 30 etc). You can also add in other defining features such as 9x16 or 8x7, if you are using multiple different framing options. We have also found that the GoPro HERO13 can be shot with both filters and lights which provides punchier looking color. PRO TIP: FLIP filters can produce great color below the 80-foot / 24-meter range, but the GoPro is limited at deeper depths and lower light situations. If it's too dark, the GoPro's sensor can't collect enough ambient light through the filter and your footage will look soft, noisy, and dark. When shooting dark or deep we highly recommend adding video lights for excellent looking results. Lower resolutions such as 2.7K or 1080, unlocks much faster frame rates, up to 240 frames per second. This allows you to slow down and stretch out clips for key moments of fast action. Use these settings when you're jumping off the boat and splashing into the water! You will need some knowledge of editing software and a reasonably powerful computer to do this. PHOTO SETTINGS While the GoPro has the ability to take photos, it is first and foremost a video camera. The GoPro has too many limitations for photography, such as its fixed focus point and inability to sync flashes that hold it back from being a great camera for still photos. If your primary goal is photography, it is worth checking out other cameras that don't have these drawbacks, and there are some excellent entry level options such as the OM System TG-7 and the Olympus E-M10 IV. That being said, here are the best settings to get the most out of the GoPro HERO13 in photo mode.
