Canon EOS R5 II Mirrorless Camera & Underwater Housing First Look
We are happy to announce our first dive with the much anticipated Canon EOS R5 II, the successor to the hugely popular Canon EOS R5 that was released back in the summer of 2020. We spent this dive shooting just photos with the Canon EOS R5 II and were immediately impressed by the fast and accurate continuous autofocus system. The camera was easily able to stick onto subjects and would not lose focus even when other subjects moved in and out of the frame. We also appreciated the updated electronic viewfinder (EVF). The EVF was clear, and didn’t have contrast issues, even when diving in the high dynamic range environment of the kelp forest. We are excited to get this camera in the water more so that we can truly put it through its paces. Stay tuned for our full review as we continue to test the Canon EOS R5 II. Canon EOS R5 II Underwater Photography First LookCanon EOS R5 II Underwater Video First LookCanon EOS R5 II First Video Dive The Canon EOS R5 II is proving to be a strong performer for underwater video. The in-camera white balance system consistently produces vibrant, accurate colors. The Canon EOS R5 II now has five white balance banks compared to the original Canon EOS R5. Another upgrade is the ability to shoot in Canon C-LOG 2 for extended dynamic range. In our tests, we found that the color in the standard picture profile is much preferred, and this will also save you a lot of time in post-processing. We were impressed with the camera’s autofocus capabilities while shooting video, which handled the challenging conditions of Monterey Bay with minimal hunting. Additionally, the Canon EOS R5 II maintained a stable operating temperature throughout our 4K 60P shoot. Overall, we're excited about the potential of this camera for underwater videography and look forward to exploring its capabilities further. Video Over Heating Tests The Canon EOS R5 II has impressed us with its heat management. A real-time on-screen gauge monitors heat buildup during video recording. We tested the camera in an aluminum housing indoors, allowing for cooling between tests. At 8K 30P RAW and 4K 60P RAW, the camera consistently recorded for 20 minutes. In 4K XF-HEVC S YCC422 10-bit, it managed 17 minutes at 120P and an impressive 75 minutes at 60P before overheating. These results were achieved in a cool, indoor environment starting with a cold camera. Performance may vary in warmer conditions or direct sunlight. Overall, the Canon EOS R5 II demonstrates promising heat mitigation capabilities.
